Tree Stand Safety

By Kyle MacNall

Last year my father got a great deal on about a dozen tree stands he bought at an auction site. The manufacturer of these stands was no longer in business (maybe there’s a reason for that) and he thought he could make a few dollars reselling them. My brother and I were excited to drop our old bulky (and sturdy) stands for these new lightweight stands that promised stealth climbing. My previous stand, one that I had been using for years, was very heavy and quite noisy while climbing.

The new stands came in and immediately we noticed how much lighter and sleeker the design was. However, they didn’t arrive until right before hunting season. We didn’t have time to try the stands out before the opening day of archery deer season. This was mistake number one.
