Remedies: The Natural Way

We have all heard the old wives’ tales about feeding a fever and starving a cold. Or is it the other way around?

Anyway, some of those old wives really knew what they were talking about. When you do not have access to a well-stocked pharmacy, Mother Nature can help you on the path to wellness. Here are some tried and true natural remedies for what ails us:

SUNBURN – Aloe does the trick, so definitely have an aloe plant handy. Just break the leaves and smooth the sap on burned areas. Grated potatoes also soothe sunburned spots. With any burn, be sure to drink plenty of water and moisturize the area. Dehydration is the enemy.

ITCHY SKIN – In addition to keeping moisturized and drinking water, a bath with oatmeal in it helps itchy skin.

NAUSEA – Lemon can stem the flow of saliva in the mouth, which adds to the feeling of nausea. Anything with ginger in it will also calm a queasy stomach. When faced with bouts of nausea, try honey* (only for ages one and up). If available, hard candy and yogurt can also improve a sour tummy. Mint leaves, chewed or added to tea, alleviate mild nausea.
